Sculpting Made Simple With Neil Grant

Have you ever wanted to make a sculpture in clay but thought that it was too difficult? In this class, I will teach you a method for creating sculptures that simplifies the sculpting process and makes it both engaging and fun. It doesn’t matter whether the sculpture is a person, an animal, an inanimate object, or a work of your imagination, you will learn how to see your subject as a simplified set of shapes that you can combine together and then refine through a series of steps into a final piece.

Students are encouraged to bring their own ideas, or you can do one of the class projects. No experience is needed, just a desire to learn and to create.

Mold Making & Casting for Beginners with Neil Grant
Bass River Arts Campus

Plaster molds are a great way of making accurate copies of items in clay and are a versatile tool for every level of clay artist. Some molds can be as simple as a single shape around which a clay dish is formed; others can be more complex and allow the artist to slip cast (pour liquid clay into) to form more intricate vessels or sculptures. Either way, plaster molds create a quick and consistent way for clay artists to replicate their work.

This 2-day workshop will introduce you to making plaster molds and using them as slump or hump molds, or to slip cast from. Using pottery plaster, you will learn how to make one- and two-part molds correctly and then use them to recreate works. This class is aimed at beginners (including experienced artists who are new to reproducing their work) and teaches the fundamentals of plaster mold making and casting in a fun and relaxed atmosphere.

Sat & Sun, Jun 21-22, 9:30am-4:30pm.

Figurative Clay

Clay is a fantastic medium for interpreting the human body and has been used throughout the ages to observe and celebrate the human spirit. In this five-day workshop you’ll learn the essential principles of figure sculpting and then apply them to creating a clay figure from real life. This workshop is aimed at beginners, however ALL levels are welcomed and encouraged to attend!

During this workshop, you’ll work with me to learn about gesture, proportion, and lines of grace, along with a little bit of anatomy, as you produce figures in clay. In the second half of the week, you’ll be working with a live model to direct and inspire your work. The class atmosphere is informative, relaxed, and fun, with plenty of demonstrations from me and one-on-one instruction as you work.
