Have you ever wanted to sculpt an animal, be it a pet, something in the wild or even something imaginary? Working with sculptor Neil Grant, you’ll learn how to bring your creations to clay life.

Working together with your fellow artists and Neil on a class project, you’ll learn the basics of sculpting an animal, from seeing it as a series of basic, proportioned shapes you’re familiar with, through to adding the finishing details. Along the way, you’ll learn about selecting proper reference images, creating supports that go all the way through the firing process, using the right tools for the right job, and hollowing and drying your work.

This class is for both beginners and those with some clay experience.

For three hours per day for three days, you will meet Neil in his studio via Zoom. You can work along with him or just watch and then practice at home using the class recordings that you’ll have access to for the duration of the class and 30 days afterwards.

During each on-line session you will review your progress, share experiences and talk about the sculpting process. Neil will also be available via email to critique your work during the course and for 30 days afterwards.

Because it’s aimed at those at home, we’ll be using a small selection of tools, which can be acquired cheaply online. Students can use these items or their own tools if they have them. Students will also need to provide their own clay, which they can acquire from a local arts store or online.
