Learn Portrait Sculpture At Home

Mondays, 1pm to 3:30pm EST, 6th October to 27th October, 4 weeks

$250 (US)

This class is for beginner and intermediate level students who want to learn how to create realistic portraits in clay. Instructor Neil Grant teaches a step-by-step method that demystifies the process for sculpting a head.

During this class you will learn about proportion, working in planes, anatomy, how to observe a model, tool selection and how to finish a piece among other things. The aim of the workshop is to give students a method they can take away with them and use to make portrait sculptures in the future. The class atmosphere is relaxed and fun but packed full of useful information that will give you a firm foundation for portrait sculpting.

Each week you will meet with Neil in his studio via Zoom. You can work along with him or just watch and then practice at home using the class recordings that you’ll have access to for the duration of the class. During each on-line session you will review your progress, share experiences and talk about the sculpting process. Neil will also be available via email to critique your work during the course.

Because it’s aimed at those at home, you will be using a small selection of tools, which can be acquired easily online. Students can use these items or their own tools if they have them. Students will also need a 12” sculpture stand, which can be purchased cheaply on-line or made from materials available at your local hardware store (instruction video provided). Students will also need to provide their own water-based clay, which they can acquire from a local arts store or online.
