ON-LINE ZOOM CLASSES

Learn to Sculpt Portraits At Home, Jan 2022

Join me in this fun and informative sculpting class that takes place completely on-line. Aimed at the beginner or returning student, this class will introduce you to the fundamentals of portrait sculpture:
-The facial map – what goes where?
-The individual features and how to create them – eyes, ears, nose
and lips
-Pulling it all together – how to make a realistic portrait
-How to make an armature stand for your portrait

At the end of the class you will have created four reference features you can keep, but even more valuable, you will have learned the essentials of how the human portrait is composed.

Each week you will meet with me in my studio via Zoom and I'll show you how to make a new facial feature using a step-by-step process. Once you’ve mastered the features, you’ll spend three weeks learning how to set up a clay portrait and place those features on it. You can work along with me or just watch and then practice at home using the class recordings that you’ll have access to for the duration of the class.

During each on-line session you will review your progress, share experiences and talk about the next week’s exercise. I will also be available via email to critique your work during the course.

Because it’s aimed at those at home, we will use easy to find household items as tools (while still achieving realistic looking features): a popsicle stick, a pencil, a paperclip, a teaspoon and a plastic card. Students can use these items or their own tools if they have them.

For students living near Cotuit Center for the Arts, there will be clay pick-up available, but more distant students can use their own water-based clay from any local art store.

Students will need a small 12" sculpture stand for the last three weeks of the class. I will show you how to construct one of these from hardware store parts (two options using either a dowel and board or plumbing parts) or where to purchase one ($18 + postage within the US).

I will provide the Zoom link to the class prior to the start of the first class.

Learn to Sculpt Facial Expressions To Convey Emotions At Home, Jan 2022

Join me in this fun and informative on-line sculpting class that teaches you how to sculpt facial expressions to convey emotions. While open to all levels, those with some sculpting experience will get the most from this course. During this class you will learn:
-How to create a relief sculpture of the face in clay
-How to change the face to portray happiness, fear, surprise,
sadness, disgust and anger
-How the muscles, skin and other elements of the face work together
to convey emotions.

Each week you will meet with me in my studio via Zoom. Focusing on a different emotion each time, I will give you a presentation on how the face moves to convey that emotion and will then demonstrate how to sculpt it. You can work along with me or just watch and then practice at home using the class recordings that you’ll have access to for the duration of the class.

During each on-line session you will review your progress, share experiences and talk about the next week’s exercise. I will also be available via email to critique your work during the course.

You will need a few basic sculpting tools to complete this class. My philosophy is ‘less is more’ where tools are concerned and students can use household items as tools while still achieving realistic looking features (think a popsicle stick, a pencil, a paperclip, a teaspoon and a plastic card). For students living near Cotuit Center for the Arts, there will be clay pick-up available, but more distant students can use their own water-based clay from any local art store.

I will provide the Zoom link prior to the start of the first class.
